The second annual Forty Under 40 Retreat took place at the Sanctuary Hotel at the Kiawah Island Golf Resort and successfully built upon our inaugural program at the Cloister in Sea Island, GA.
Over the course of the day and one-half program, attendees heard from professionals both inside and outside of sports on a variety of topics including work/life balance, dealing with adversity, overcoming challenges, team building and the upcoming presidential election. In addition to the program sessions, attendees took part in a variety of activities hosted by AIG Private Client Group and Tiffany & Co. which included playing 18-holes on the pristine Ocean Course; a tennis tournament including skills drills sessions at the Roy Barth Tennis Center; a select wine-tasting led by Kiawah's in-house sommelier in the Courtyard of the Terrace Ballroom overlooking the Atlantic Ocean; and an evening of "Old and New School" games including Texas Hold'em, pool, darts and Nintendo's Wii.
The Retreat kicked off on the 26th with an address from Dave Checketts, Chairman, SCP Worldwide and Owner, St. Louis Blues & Real Salt Lake. Checketts discussed "Why There is No Forty OVER 40: Where is All of This Leading You?" and provided insight into what may be in store for them – both professionally and personally – in the years ahead. Complementing his address were his own colorful work/life balance stories and lessons-learned.
A "One-On-One" interview with Ernie Johnson, Jr.; Sports Broadcaster and Emmy Award Winner, TNT and TBS, followed. Johnson also shared his feelings on the importance of work/family balance. As he expounded upon his dealings with personal adversity, the interview would become emotional only to be livened with tales of his on-set dealings with characters, Charles Barkley and Kenny Smith.
Mark Halperin, Political Analyst, Time Magazine, Time.com and ABC News started the second day with an inside look at the upcoming presidential election. In his address "Election 2008: What Factors Will Determine Who Wins the White House in November?" he provided insight into key factors to winning the White House, and shared his thought on the strengths and weaknesses of the party nominees.
Bob McKillop, Head Basketball Coach, Davidson College closed the program with a motivational speech on "Team Building and Leadership: In Sports, In Business ... It's All the Same." McKillop coached attendees on building, motivating and leading their team while sharing personal anecdotes about March Madness and Davidson College's run at the NCAA Elite Eight.
