Five Questions with CEO, Relay Worldwide, Wally Hayward

1. What are two industry trends you are watching most closely?
How the recent Miller/Coors and InBev/Anheuser-Busch deals will impact the sports marketing industry both on an international, national and local level in 2009 and beyond. How will the largest spending category in sports impact teams, leagues, networks, athletes and agencies?

I'm paying close attention to the U.S. economy and what impact it may have on the sports marketing industry going into 2009. There are a lot of sponsor renewals up with several high-profiled properties at the end of this year and the question will be do they re-sign and if so, at what price.

2. Sports business story you are watching most closely?

The current sale of the first place Chicago Cubs and Wrigley Field. Who will be the owner and at what price? Will Wrigley still be in the name? And will the Cubs win the World Series 100 years later?

3. The most interesting observation you’ve had from the Beijing Games is...?
That Michael Phelps just days after the opening ceremonies is already the king of the Beijing Olympic Games. In my opinion, swimming has taken the gold for having the best stories, personalities and performances in the games to date. With all the excitement and attention around the Beijing Games, I'm very surprised by how little sponsors have activated their sponsorships here in the U.S. marketplace.

4. The best advice you’ve ever received is...?
From Coach Randy Walker, who said every day you are painting a picture of yourself so you want to make sure your decisions, core values and actions are what you want hanging on a wall later in life.

5. My management style is...?
To be an inspirational leader who allows everyone on my team the opportunity to grow and succeed both personally and professionally.
